Photocopy of letter from Zabdiel Rogers, New London, to Gov. Jonathan Trumbull, telling him of the British attack on New London on 6 Sept. 1781. Rogers had ordered his regiment to march to its defence but the battle was over when they reached the town. The letter describes New London being burned; Col. Ledyard is forced to surrender and his murder, the British taking about forty prisoners, among them Ebenezer Ledyard, New London's vessels escaping upriver, and suffering losses in goods, provisions, stores, and shipping. Other topics represented include the Battle of Groton Heights.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
